Schemas and Morality: Exploring Children’s Justice through the Layered Model

This workshop presents the ‘Layered Model‘, blending schema therapy with insights into children’s inherent sense of justice and morality. Contrary to the belief that fairness and moral judgment are solely learned, this model posits these traits as natural, emerging early in life.

We’ll examine how early maladaptive schemas—persistent thought and feeling patterns—affect children’s justice needs. Scientific studies and case examples will showcase the model’s clinical effectiveness.

Attendees will learn how different schemas influence children’s moral development. This knowledge is vital for therapists working with clients across ages on justice perception and moral choices.

The ‘Layered Model’ seeks to cultivate a balanced moral view by providing a framework to adjust harmful schemas. This workshop equips professionals with novel approaches, merging research and clinical experience to enhance therapeutic practices.

The use of creativity, art and play in Schema Therapy for Children and Adolescents

(Katerina Aggeli, PhD., Roza Laious, PhD. – Greek Association of Schema Therapy)

Therapeutic work with children and adolescents offers a great opportunity for both the therapist and the child to develop their imagination and creativity as a means to support the therapeutic procedure and goals.

The therapist has to make an effective use of his/her personal resources in order to cope with various psychotherapeutic challenges: share information about the case conceptualisation and the therapeutic rational, explain and implement therapeutic methods and techniques, strengthen the therapeutic relationship and alliance etc.

The therapeutic knowledge and experience in Schema Therapy (ST) with children and adolescents provides the therapist with a solid conceptual base, on which he/she can experiment new therapeutic skills via play, sketches, drawing, symbols, role playing, slogans, story-telling, drama, pantomime, verses, handcrafts etc. The rational of the use of creativity, imagination, art and play in ST with children and adolescents will be presented via various clinical examples, arriving from different age, social and psychopathology backgrounds.

Aggressiveness in childhood: a clinical case with externalizing disorder

Aggressiveness in childhood is a common problem that can have negative consequences on the life of the child and his family. Schema Therapy with children and adolescents is an integrative therapeutic approach that can help children and parents manage aggressiveness and other behavioral problems.

In this talk, Terenzi will introduce the concept of aggressiveness and present a case report of a boy with conduct disorder. He will describe the assessment process and the treatment used, which is based on identifying and working with dysfunctional Modes. In particular, he will focus on the experiential techniques that have been used to deal with the child’s aggressiveness. Finally, he will discuss the importance of parental involvement in the treatment process and provide suggestions for working with aggressive children.

Creative Ways to Strengthen the Wise and Competent Mode in a Group ST-CA setting

This presentation reveals the design of a protocol for working in Group Schema Therapy with children and adolescents and provides information, methods and strategies with which to build a flexible and developmentally appropriate group programme. It focuses on the development of the Competent Mode, which is the primary resource for children’s and adolescents’ emotional, cognitive and social skills and competencies.

As the stages of the protocol are presented, those types of interventions and activities that have yielded outstanding results over the years of practice will be highlighted. The methods presented will be those specific to the ST group protocol, with a focus on combining experiential techniques with creativity, playfulness and novelty.  The Wise and Competent Modes will be the basic pillars around which we will weave novel experiential strategies for skill building that will support the development of the future Healthy Adult.

Parent-Focused Group Schema Coaching Protocol; CAREFREE (Carers Program for Fluency in Resonance, and Empowerment in Eating Disorders) Intervention for Parents of Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa

    (Susan Simspson, Fatemeh Seifi)

Adolescent Eating Disorders (ED) have a significant and long-standing impact on the mental and physical health of adolescents and their families. While Family-Based Therapy (FBT) for adolescent Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is the recommended first-line treatment, it does not work for all families, and further research is needed into a deeper-level interventions for this population. Hence, we developed and implemented a novel 12-session schema-based protocol (CAREFREE) for coaching the parents in a group format to help their AN adolescent through their recovery journey.

In this workshop, we are going to present some of the ST practical strategies based on this protocol which helped parents in our study to enhance their self-awareness, emotion regulation skills, and parent-adolescent interaction. Suggested interventions for working with adolescents with Anorexia alongside the Carers program will also be briefly discussed. Overall, our study yielded positive results in terms of parents being empowered in improving their empathy and attunement skills especially, in the challenging refeeding process and minimizing their interpersonal conflicts via getting insight into the mode clashes and activated schema modes in themselves and their adolescents.

    Samantha Flores

Samantha Flores is neuropsychiatrist and schema therapist working with children and adolescents as well as with adults in Mexico. She currently runs a private practice with a variety of diagnoses of psychiatric and neuropsychiatric patients through medication and psychotherapy. She integrated several psychotherapeutic aproches into schema therapy: compassion focused psychotherapy, functional analytic psychotherapy, sensorymotor psychotherapy  and sand tray therapy; she works with patients who suffer from trauma, functional neurologic disorders and patients with chronic mental illness as well as personality disorders.

Sand tray technique in schema therapy for Adolescents

Sand try therapy is an expressive, experiential and hands-on approach in which with the use of a tray with sand, a variety of miniature figures and sometimes water the client creates stories representing his/her inner world.

It offers a safe and protected space in which to project relationship dynamics, specific situations and memories. It allows the exploration of experiences that might be too overwhelming to talk about directly. It aids the healing process via memory rescripting and mode dialogues between the different figures representing either the client´s  modes or people´s relationships depending on the setting portrayed.

In this webinar, we will talk about the rationale for integrating it within schema therapy and a simple 6-step methodology: creating, experiencing and remodeling the originar scene, therapeutic intervention, debreafing and closure.  We will also have a chance to watch a short video demostration.
